The Canadian Chinese Orchestra’s New Year Concert was held with great splendor at The Salvation Army Yorkminster Citadel, marking a magnificent beginning to the Spring Festival series celebrating events.
Under the visionary leadership of Artistic Director Amely Zhou, the orchestra was guided by the dynamic talents of Associate Conductor Mike Liu and guest conductor Dr. Matthew Poon. The performance showcased a stellar ensemble of musicians, including acclaimed pipa virtuoso Lilian Yang, yangqin maestro Zhang Di, guzheng luminary Lina Cao, wind instrument specialists Herman Li and Wu Lipeng, as well as rising stars Tricia Zhang on guzheng and Niclo Liang on erhu. Together, these exceptional artists, supported by a multigenerational Chinese orchestra, delivered a mesmerizing program that seamlessly wove together Chinese traditions and Western influences, creating a cultural and musical masterpiece to usher in the New Year.
The evening began with a commanding performance of the traditional classics "General’s Command" and "Summer," pieces that evoked grandeur and awe. This was followed by the hauntingly beautiful guzheng solo "Defending the Borders," performed with heartfelt precision by young artist Tricia Zhang. Yangqin player Zhang Di offered a lively rendition of the ensemble piece "Grand Xiang," while Niclo Liang’s evocative erhu-cello duet "Chrysanthemum Terrace" painted a tapestry of delicate emotion. The orchestra’s performance of "The Festivities of Chang'an" was a resounding celebration of ancient Chinese grandeur, a symphonic depiction of vibrant festivals and jubilant gatherings.
A standout moment of the evening was the world premiere of "Third Movement," an original composition by Dr. Matthew Poon. Infused with emotional depth and modern creativity, this piece brought a fresh and innovative energy to the concert, captivating the audience with its bold expression.
Adding to the splendor was a medley of world-renowned musical gems, where traditional Chinese melodies merged harmoniously with global influences, offering a transcendent auditory experience that delighted every listener.
The suona concerto "Nine Hundred and Ninety-Nine Roses," performed by the masterful Herman Li alongside the orchestra, enchanted the audience with its lyrical charm and poignant beauty, leaving a lasting impression.
As the evening drew to a close, the orchestra delivered a rousing performance of the iconic "Dance of the Golden Snake," a jubilant and energetic finale that brought the audience to their feet. With its spirit of harmony, joy, and cultural celebration, the concert welcomed the Year of the Snake with resounding cheer.
This exquisite event, a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, poetry and passion, offered a rich and unforgettable musical journey. It serves as the curtain-raiser for a series of Lunar New Year celebrations, promising more dazzling performances in the days to come.
